THE JOURNEY

In honor of the impactful legacy left behind by Coach Bathian Mason, the Bathian Mason Impact Award was established. 

Bathian graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1991. Throughout high school, Bathian had a passion for playing basketball, cutting hair, and listening to music. Bathian pursued higher education at Florida A&M before returning to Grand Valley State University. Despite facing a medical condition that posed obstacles to his academic journey, Bathain’s determination propelled him forward.

For nearly two decades, Bathian dedicated himself to serving the Grand Rapids community as an athletic coach within the Grand Rapids Public Schools system. His impact extended far beyond the court and field, as he coached student-athletes in volleyball, basketball, and track and field, instilling in them not only athletic prowess but also valuable life skills.

Bathian started his coaching career in 2004 at City Middle School, laying the foundation for a storied legacy. Over the years, he won countless championships, a testament to his coaching ability to mold aspiring athletes into champions.

For 12 years, Bathian served as a varsity assistant coach at both Grand Rapids Creston and Grand Rapids Union High Schools. His coaching style was characterized by a unique blend of inspiration, motivation, and genuine care for the overall well-being of his players.

Beyond the realm of sports, Coach Mason drew strength and peace through the study of Afro-centric spirituality. His resilience in the face of adversity was truly remarkable, and his positive outlook on life became a source of inspiration for everyone he encountered.

On December 7, 2022, Bathain’s courageous battle with epilepsy came to an end, a journey marked by grace, bravery, and strength. Throughout his life, he approached each day with positivity and determination, refusing to let epilepsy hinder him from pursuing his passions.

The Bathian Mason Impact Award serves as a tribute to Coach Mason's enduring legacy, honoring coaches who, like him, embody resilience, leadership, and a commitment to positively impacting both the athletic and personal lives of their players and communities. Through this award, Coach Mason's legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to overcome challenges with the same grace and determination that defined his remarkable life.
